Class begins January 9, 2004 and will meet Friday mornings at 10:00 AM. Please call Colleen, 244-9781, for more information

EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS

Eucharistic Ministers assist the Pastors by serving communion to the homebound several times a year. The next scheduled date for home communions is November 30th, the first Sunday in Advent. Visits are made between 1 PM and 4 PM in the afternoon, if possible. Ministers go out in teams of two, and training is provided.

If you are interested in participating in this ministry, please contact one of the Pastors.

HELPING HANDS FOOD RUN

October 11, 2003 is the next date that Aldersgate will be preparing and serving meals for York’s homeless and needy. If you have helped in the past you know what a rewarding experience it is. The food will be prepared at the church in 2-hour shifts and then delivered and served at three locations in York City. Working side by side with others from our Aldersgate family has warmed my heart. It is a humbling experience to serve, to see the people standing in line in anticipation of a good hot meal. It’s a good reminder of how much we have and take for granted.

Watch the bulletin boards and Sunday worship folders for food items needed, as well a sign up sheets. We will need lots of help in the kitchen on that Saturday, as well as a team to serve downtown.

Thank you for your consideration of being part of this worthwhile project.
Bonnie Young 741-6780

Health Screenings Coming to Church

On Thursday, October 16th, the church hall will be the location for some important health saving tests. One that day Doppler Diagnostics, will offer you a stroke/carotid artery screening. This is done by scanning, using ultrasound technology, the carotid artery in the neck for plaque build up, which can lead to a stroke. Did you know that blocked carotid arteries cause 75% of strokes and most victims show no warning signs? There will be two other vascular tests available and an osteoporosis test. There is a cost for the tests ranging from $25-$40. This is a health prevention program, and with early detection, these problems can be treated. The results are sent directly to you and you are referred back to your own doctor. Call 1-800-446-0925 for an appointment.

ALPHA: Have you heard about it?

ALPHA is a 10-week opportunity to explore the validity and relevance of the Christian faith for our lives today. It is a practical introduction to the basics of Christianity with loads of opportunity for debate and discussion in an informal, friendly atmosphere. Each week people meet together for a meal, a video lesson on topics such as “Who is Jesus?” “Why did Jesus Die?” “How can I be Sure of my Faith?” “Does God Still Heal Today?”, followed by small group interaction.

ALPHA is for those who have never set foot in a church, those who maybe once attended, but have lost touch, and even regular church-goers who want to explore the basics of their faith a bit deeper.

Aldersgate is about to embark on this journey of outreach through ALPHA, but we need your help. Every single Aldersgate member can be a vital part of this outreach ministry. Here are our needs:

1. Small Group Leaders: those who will lead small group discussions after participants have viewed the video each week. Number of leaders needed is dependant upon number of participants. Training available.
2. Helpers: those with the gift of helping and hospitality needed to set up, serve a simple meal, and clean up.
3. Worship Leader: someone with the gift of musical leadership who can bring the group into the presence of God through 2-3 worship songs each week.
4. Prayer Partners: anyone who will pray for ALPHA at Aldersgate. If you can’t help physically, PLEASE pray for ALPHA to reach out to those in our church and our community who need Jesus Christ in their lives.

ALPHA began 20 years ago in London and currently over 5,000 courses are running in the U.S. alone. It works. Please prayerfully consider being a part of the ALPHA team, and start thinking about those you know who may be interested in taking the ALPHA course at Aldersgate. We are hoping to offer our first class in the spring. A training conference is upcoming October 20-21 in Pittsburgh. For more information, please call me. Susan Krieger, 747-9928

ALPHA! NOW YOU KNOW!

Wanna Feel Like a Kid Again?

The Barbara A. Gable Memorial Youth Scholarship is awarded annually to an Aldersgate Youth who has been an active participant in our youth program or the activities of our church. The recipient can be enrolled in any two year or four year college, university or technical school. The Aldersgate Parent/Child Preschool Fund provides funds for the future expansion of our preschool and includes the Louise M. Sterner Preschool Scholarship which assists in making our preschool available to a wide range of children who need individual and loving attention.

These two funds along with their umbrella organization, our Aldersgate Endowment Fund, legally require we annually publish their need for persons to serve as “members-at-large” for the coming year. All of these positions involve an interest in furthering the goals of the Funds and attendance at several meetings during 2004. If you are interested in serving or requesting additional information, please contact Dick Hershey, Chair of the Aldersgate Endowment Fund or Sherry Smith in the church office.
If you have an interest in furthering the goals of these Funds but are not able to serve as a “member-at-large”, a contribution to the fund is an appropriate way to support their goals in the future and after you are gone.

Going the Distance Campaign Update

By now you are aware of Aldersgate’s campaign to eliminate our building fund debt by September 30,2004. Our remaining debt on July 1st was $235,393 and we are now committed to “Going The Distance”.
Sixty-nine families have responded to the campaign so far with planned giving of almost $100,000 during the next year. We thank all of you who have done so and are counting on many more of you to join in now. We hope a large number of the remaining 579 families of Aldersgate will plan to give the additional $135,000 needed to retire this debt. Won’t you please consider contributions of $250 or $500 or $1,000 over the next year?
Our dream is for everyone at Aldersgate to take a personal role in helping our church fulfill God’s ministry. Your involvement and pledge towards eliminating our debt is a tangible way to help. Please pray on it and respond as you are moved.

Women of Faith

If you missed the June “Women of Faith” conference, you have a second chance to go! Dates of conference: November 7-8,2003. Place: First Union Center, Philadelphia. Patsy Clairmont is a featured speaker, among many. She alone is worth the trip! I’m attending, along with so many wonderful women from Zion -- please call me for more information. But hurry, the bus is filling fast! Susan Krieger, 747-9928.

Book Talk is Back!

Bring along your coffee and donut for an informal and thought provoking discussion of Michael Long’s book
Have the Time of Your Life:
Living for GOD in Each Moment.

Starting Sunday, September 21st, 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. Call Pat Davis 246-1463 or Libbet Bowman 845-1179 for questions or to order a book ($15.29).

Michael was an associate pastor at Aldersgate and pastor of Harris Street United Methodist Church. Currently he is an assistant professor of religion at Elizabethtown College.

“Michael Long has given us a thoughtful word on holy living and the use of time. He shows us how to live meaningful and worthwhile lives in the midst of stress, tragedy, and boredom, while reminding us that our hopes must be tempered with realism. The stories he shares represent universal human issues, and his responses to them are wise and helpful.”
William O. Paulsen, President Emeritus, Lexington Theological Seminary

FUSION: Youth Ministry

We have a new mission statement for our Youth Ministry at Aldersgate.

We are committed to Fellowship and Unity through Serving others, Introducing youth to Christ, Offering ourselves to God and Nurturing each other as we grow deeper in relationship with Jesus Christ.

FUSION
A new name to go with our new direction.... FUSION. We are fusing together to become one strong ministry under God. This means that all ministry leaders (Sunday School, Fellowship, Small Groups, Beech Trees, Footprintz), all youth and all parents will have a part in the ministry. We will work on service to others and reaching out to youth who don't yet know our wonderful Savior. We will give of our time and talents to serve God and will support each other as we each grow deeper in our relationship with Him. Unified, Fused together.

With the wonderful growth that we have experienced comes the need for more people to be involved. It’s a very exciting ministry and one that could change your outlook on life. All you need to be “qualified” is a heart for Christ and a passion to share it. Leave the rest up to God.

We are so excited about where God has brought us over the past year and we cannot wait to see where he's taking us next! With so much growth, the possibilities are endless. What part do you see yourself playing in this wonderful ministry?

I would love to talk with you about our ministry and where we are going with it.

In Christ’s service,
Alesia Fritts – Youth Director

Your blood type reveals your personality. We previously profiled blood type “A” and type “O” people. This month will be blood type “B” persons.
Type “B” came about when men and women began migrating. You are best known for adaptability and independence. A free spirit, you dislike restrictions. A high proportion of self-made people are type “B”. You enjoy being around people and others love to be with you. Around friends, you would rather listen to what everyone has to say before offering your opinion. People can think you are being stand - offish, but time reveals you are just waiting for the right moment to present your view.
You can help someone you might never meet – Donate Blood.

Ministry of Worship and Music

HELP WANTED - The Worship and Music Ministry has several areas in which you can serve. Experience is not necessary and the rewards are out of this world.
o ACOLYTE COORDINATOR is needed to schedule and train youth to serve as acolytes during the Traditional Worship. This could be one person, a couple or several to work as a team.
o FLOWER TEAM is forming to help deliver the altar flowers to cheer members who are ill, hospitalized, nursing home residents, etc. It will give you a change to brighten someone’s day and get to know a member you may not yet know.
o ADVENT SEASON will be here before you know it. We will be organizing a team to plan for the decorating involved.
No experience is needed for any of these areas but much guidance is available. Please prayerfully consider where you can serve and give Linda Clark a call at 741-0654

Blood Donors Needed!

Did you know that your blood type reveals your personality? There are four blood types, O-A-B-AB. This month we will profile the type "O" personality.

This is the original blood type and these persons are ambitious, flexible, full of confidence and not afraid to take risks. They can handle more stress than most people, set higher goals and push themselves to succeed. They are natural born leaders but are not all "work." An "O" tends to be romantic at heart, secretly craves candlelight dinners and bouquets of flowers. Donate your blood and see if you are an "O" personality. Don't miss out on this wonderful personality test!

You can donate a unit of blood for the Aldersgate Blood Donor Day, Monday, June 23, Suite 198, Apple Hill Donor Center. Please call 741-8307 for an appointment. We need 20 donors this day.

Suggested donations to The WELL for the month of June are Peanut Butter and Jelly. As always, these are only suggestions. Other items to stock the food shelves, and items for the bed and bath warehouse, are also welcome.

The WELL extends a special Thank you to the donors of the complete set of dishes and the tableware settings. These items are super additions to the bed and bath warehouse.

Services were provided to 743 persons during the month of April, bringing the total served to 2,174 for the first four months of 2003. This is about a 14% increase over the1,902 persons served during the same four months in 2002.

The WELL still has a need for a volunteer with a covered pickup truck, SUV or van to handle pick up of items at various locations, and deliver them to the WELL. If you can help (even occasionally) with this volunteer opportunity, please call Marge Ruppert, Director of The WELL at 852-7345 weekdays from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM.

Local Mission/work camp opportunity

We at Aldersgate UM Church can be proud of the many missions we support both financially and with personal labor. The list of missions supported during 2002 numbers at least 45 which was a pleasant surprise. Let's keep up the great work! But alas, even with all we are doing, there is a desperate need right in our back yard that I am certain many in Aldersgate will want to support.

I speak of our Methodist Home for Children located in Mechanicsburg, PA. During a recent visit they told me of the desperate situation that exists in many of the homes on campus where the children live. There are only 4 cottages, each housing about12 children, so we are not talking about huge dormitories.

What we would like to do is get a team from Aldersgate to visit the Home and survey what is needed in the following areas: Electrical and plumbing service, Roof evaluation, Painting -- interior and exterior, Carpeting and drapes, Bedding, Children's personal needs ( toiletries, games, reading material, etc.), Adequacy of air conditioning systems, grounds work.

We need a "few good Aldersgaters" to offer their services and expertise to help in the evaluation. Once the needs are listed we can pick and choose where we can be effective.
* There may be great opportunities for our youth groups to get involved.
* Young adults and their children may get great rewards helping children
the same ages as their own.
* Possibly some of our Methodist Men, who did such a great job on the Habitat home could find time to provide needed supervision and expertise for jobs that are undertaken.

The need is there -- the need is close to home. We have the ability. We need your support.

If you can assist with the initial evaluation of what is needed, please contact Wayne Davis at 741-1403. We will schedule a visit to the home for mid to late June. Once the work is defined we'll be back in touch with the congregation asking for broad based assistance.

Wayne Davis

The WELL provided services to 487 families or 1,431 persons during the first three months of 2003. This is in contrast to serving 443 families or 1,358 persons during the same three months in 2002.

The WELL continues to have a pressing need for a volunteer (or volunteers) with a covered pickup truck, SUV or a van to handle pick up of items at various locations and deliver them to The WELL. If you can help with this volunteer opportunity, please call Marge Ruppert, Director of The WELL, at 852-7345 weekdays from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM.

New Safey Study...

How to Be Safer the Rest of Your Life

Avoid riding in Automobiles. They are responsible for 20% of all deaths.

Do not stay at home! 17% of all accidents occur at home.

Avoid walking on streets and sidewalks because 14% of all accidents are suffered by pedestrians.

Don’t travel by air, rail, or water, because 16% of all accidents occur on these forms of transportation.

You will be pleased to learn that only .001% of all accidents occur in worship services! And these are usually related to previously know physical disorders.

Therefore, logic tells us that the safest place in the world for you to be at any time, is at church!

Bible study is safe too. The percentage of accidents that occur during Bible study is nearly Zero!

For Safety’s Sake – Attend Church and read your Bible, it could save your life!!!

ANDREA MUNDIS AWARDED SEMINARY STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP

It is a pleasure for the Aldersgate Endowment Fund Committee to announce that Andrea M. Mundis is the first recipient of the $6,000 Harry B. & Ruth A. Nicholas Seminary Student Scholarship for 2003. The Nicholas scholarship was a recent bequest in the will of the late Ruth Nicholas, who along with her husband Harry, were long-time members of Aldersgate and the Second EUB Church. The scholarship, part of the Aldersgate Endowment Fund, provides a source of financial assistance to Aldersgate members pursuing a career in the ministry.

The Nicholas bequest is just one of the many ways the Aldersgate Endowment Fund can help Aldersgate members and friends to remember our Church after they are gone. The Endowment fund was created to provide the opportunity to make charitable gifts to the Church that will become a permanent endowment of financial support and living memorial. The endowment fund is intended for purposes that are not part of the church’s established programs funded through the annual operating budget of the church and the regular giving of its members.

Contributions can be made to the Aldersgate Endowment Fund or more specifically to the Nicholas Seminary Scholarship in the form of gifts of money or assets in honor of or in memory of friends, family or other special people in our lives. Perhaps even more important for our Church’s long-term future, are commitments through life insurance, wills, trusts and estates. However, all gifts are important and welcome – large and small, unrestricted or designated, current or deferred.

Please take a few minutes the next time you see Andrea to congratulate her and to show your support to her in the pursuit of her career. Also, for additional information how you can participate in the Aldersgate Endowment Fund or the Nicholas Seminary Scholarship please see one the pastors or Dick Hershey, Endowment Fund Chairman.

Praying For The President

The following prayer request was on the website of InTouch Ministries, which is lead by Dr. Charles Stanley. You may find it helpful in your prayers in the days ahead.

A President who begins the day on his knees with the Word of God is worthy of all our prayers. Please Pray for President Bush in the following areas:
Ø Protection for the lives of him and his family
Ø Peace and clarity of mind as he stands in leadership and defense of liberty
Ø For the perfect will of God to be revealed to him
Ø That God will provide wise and godly counsel in his administration
Ø That he will draw aside to fast and seek the Lord
Ø Godly character and decision-making
Ø That he will perform the will of God relating to world events
Also on this website, www.intouch.org, Dr. Stanley has a special message on A Christian’s Duty in a Time of War. He says, “God never promised that life would always be convenient or comfortable. Nor did He say that we would avoid all danger, suffering, or loss. However, He did promise to be with us through whatever we face in life. And, in times of trouble, we each have a specific God-given duty: prayer.”
Dr. Stanley ends by saying, “Just as Jehosaphat and Judah sought the Lord through fasting and prayer, we must seek the will of God during these troubling times. It is our duty to pray seriously for our nation, to fall on our knees and cry out to the Lord for His direction and guidance. When we pray to our heavenly Father, we should acknowledge the fact that He is the almighty God, with absolute control over everything that happens. Foremost, God desires that we surrender our pride, and prayerfully turn to Him with confidence that He will fulfill His perfect will for our good and for His glory. God is the only defense for a nation under attack; like Judah, it is time that we also ‘turn our attention to seek the LORD’ (2 Chron. 20:4). This article offers specific passages from scripture to aid in prayer. Copies of the entire message are available in the church office.

We will continue to pray that someone will want to lead this ministry team and take another look at possibly resuming ARF or something similar in the fall. May God richly bless those who devoted much time and energy to ARF over the past years.

Library News

The library at Aldersgate is a wonderful source of information for all ages -- toddler to senior citizen. Whether you want to read for enjoyment or information, your’re sure to find something to meet your needs.

"Just Like Mama," "Papa's Gift," and "The Nightingale" are beautifully illustrated children's books that were recently added to the library. These books are wonderful read-aloud books for you and your children.

Three of the new books in the library are by local authors. "Abner's Story," by Louise Coffman, is a fictionalized story of the Pennsylvania Dutch in York County. The story is suitable for the whole family and features superstitions, customs, and language familiar to many York residents.

Lynn Eib has written "When God and Cancer Meet - True Stories of Hope and Healing." Lynn is a cancer survivor and the founder of the Cancer Prayer Support group. She is a cancer patient advocate for Dr. Marc Hirsh, an oncologist who practices in Hanover. The true stories in her book tell how cancer patients and their families were touched by God.

"Preaching Biblical Wisdom in a Self-Help Society was written by Alyce McKenzie." Alyce is a former pastor at Aldersgate. Paul and Doris McKenzie, Alyce's in-laws, donated the book to the library.

SMALL GROUP LEADERSHIP TRAINING

Why are Small Groups so important at Aldersgate? Here are 10 good reasons.

1. Need for spiritual growth.
We can obtain spiritual growth through Small Groups. There needs to be a small group where there can be some accountability; where there is some discussion; where iron begins to sharpen iron. Jesus was the model for this. He took 12 and spent time with them.

2. Need for friendship, support and encouragement in the church body.
People walk into the Aldersgate building on Sunday morning, sit in the middle of a pew among hundreds of people and many of them do not have one good relationship. They sit there, open their Bibles, take notes and walk out. No relationships, nobody touching their lives, reaching out, caring, sharing or ministering to them. Small groups are needed because the larger the church becomes the more difficult it is to really have those small intimate relationships for encouragement and ministry that we need.

3. Need for strength in the face of temptation and trail.
We are all tested. Galatians 6 tells us to help carry one another’s burdens. We know that the people, who ask for prayer during worship need prayer, love, a touch, a hug and some care but it is impossible to provide these things in a large church setting.

4. Need to give and receive love.
In Romans chapter 12 we are told to love one another warmly as Christian brothers, be eager to show respect for one another, share your belongings for the needy fellow Christian and open your homes for strangers. In the large church setting on Sunday mornings, people don’t have the opportunity to give and receive love like they need.

5. Need to serve others.
Philippians 2 tells us not to do anything from selfish ambition or from cheap desire to boast, but be humble to one another. Always considering others better than ourselves, look out for one another’s interest not just for your own. In a large church it is impossible for large amount of people to serve. In small groups, everybody can serve one another. They can use their gift for the glory of God.
6. Need to discover and develop the spiritual gifts.
What gifts do members of our church have that are not being utilized? There is no way we are ever going to tap them unless we can get them into small groups and find out who they are.

7. Need to assimilate new people who attend our church.
Every week we have visitors at Aldersgate many of whom are looking for a church home. Church statistics tells us that a person has to have a valid relationship within the first 5-6 times they attend or they won’t come back. With small groups, the person who brought that visitor could invite them into a small group in their neighborhood.

8. Need to grow beyond our facilities.
Our challenge is to keep on growing for God. Eventually we will outgrow our facilities. There is only one way we can grow beyond our facilities. That is through small groups where we are meeting in the homes. There is no limit to the number of small groups that we can have.

9. Need to penetrate our county for Jesus Christ.
Through small groups we can get into our neighborhoods by meeting in the homes. It reads in Acts 2 from the Living Bible, “They worship together regularly at the temple each day and meet in small groups in homes for communion. The whole city was favorable to them and each day God had added to them all who were being saved.” Coming to church on Sunday for corporate worship is kind of a rally atmosphere for inspiration. Small groups are for relationships and that is where involvement comes into play.

10. Need to develop leaders.
The most effective leadership training is a combination of caring and sharpening small groups and personalizing relationships one on one. If you want to develop leaders as Jesus did you have put time in a small group where they are close enough to be able to see the leader and no
one is more vital to the success of our small group ministry that its
leaders. That is why we are offering training for Small Group leaders.
This training will help you develop communication skills and identify your
leadership styles for maximum effectiveness.

The training is schedule for April 11 & 12. On Friday evening we will meet from 6:30-9:30 and again on Saturday from 8:30-3:00. If you are interested please contact Jim Stambaugh at 854-7014.

FRIENDLY CALLS

Don’t be surprised if you get a friendly call this month. We are beginning a new ministry. We have a group of people who are going to start calling members just to say “Hi”. The intent is to make certain everyone feels welcome and cared-for in our church family. Our goal is that every family will be contacted every 3 months. Currently we have nine callers on our team. Each has agreed to call a list of people just to see if we can serve them in any way or if they have needs that need to made known. Our nine callers are going to touch 87 families – that is a great start! We could use several more callers. If you enjoy talking on the phone and have a few extra moments to help us make a call or two every month, please contact Sue Witmyer at 840-8871.

A.R.F SURVEY RESULTS
We received 45 responses to the survey. Seventeen of the respondents have no interest in ARF. Based on the 28 positive responses, we have determined that there is a potential to reach about 100 people. The data suggests that there should be monthly, rather than weekly, home-cooked meals on a Wednesday evening. Dinner should be served and cleaned up between 6:00 and 7:00 PM followed by optional small study groups following the meal, with clean-up and conclusion by 8:00 PM. There are many folks who expressed a willingness to help with the work. Before we can implement the new format, we need a person to serve as the Leader of this Ministry Team. If you have a passion to lead this work, please call Bob Hammen at 246-9472 or Rosemary Herbert at 854-4276.

Mission Moments
In addition to our on-going missions in Malihambe, Ghana, Bethel and Red Bird, several new possibilities were explored at the February meeting of the Commission on Missions. Right now, many of Aldersgate's people are assisting York's Helping Hands for the Homeless as well as our on-going outreach to Bell Shelter, The WELL, Our Daily Bread soup kitchen, etd. In July 2004 Aldersgate will again send a team of 25 -- 30 adults and youth (9th grade and above) to Red Bird Mission in Kentucky. New possibilities include summer work projects for youth, a trip to Haiti with other churches, Helping at the Children's Home in Mechanicsburg, Logus Academy, helping at Mt Pisgah UMC, Mission Central and others. Got some ideas? Join us at our next meeting, Tuesday, April 15th in the Parlor, or place a note in Bob Davis' mailbox.

Blood Donations

Aldersgate will continue to participate in the Blood Donor Program at Wellspan Health. Donors are asked to call the Donor Center at 741-8307 to schedule appointments. Walks-ins are welcome, but it is more efficient for the donor and the center if appointments are scheduled. You may schedule on any day that suits your schedule. Aldersgate will continue to schedule drives at the center if you like the fellowship of donating with others. Our goal in 2003 is 130 donations. We met this in 2002 thanks to you!

News from The WELL

Suggested donations to The WELL for the month of March are

Laundry Supplies & Cleaning Products.

As always, these are only suggestions and other items to stock the shelves are always welcome. The WELL sends a "Thank you" to the donor of the box full of items for their Bed and Bath warehouse.

For the calendar year 2002, the WELL served 1,956 families or a total of 6,112 individuals. Aldersgate donated a total of 1,869 pounds (nearly one ton!) of food and personal care items during 2002.

The WELL continues to have a need for a volunteer (or volunteers) with a covered pickup truck, SUV or a van to handle pick up of baked goods from the Weis Markets at West Manchester Mall and at White Street in West York each weekday morning around 8:00 or 8:30 am. And delivery to the WELL. If you can help, please call Marge, Director of The WELL, at 852-7345 between 9:00 am and 1:30 pm.

Helping Hands...

On Saturday, April 5, 2003, Aldersgate Church will be feeding the homeless in York through HELPING HANDS OF York. Everyone"s help is being sought to help feed the 350 people that stand in line at the three outdoor distribution stops. We not only provide a hot meal, but also a brown-bag lunch for the next day.

We will be preparing lasagna as the main course beginning at noon and be ready to take to the road by 4:00 pm. Hopefully we will be finished by 7:00 pm. Many hands are needed to help with the cooking, serving and clean-up. Please look for sign-up sheets posted in the church building and add your name to help.

If you have never before participated in a soup kitchen program, this is an excellent opportunity to experience the joy of serving. Our Lord challenges us to honor him by our service to those in need. During this season of Lent, you may wish to donate a few hours of your time as an exercise in self-denial. You will be both humbled and blessed by this experience.

Should this particular time not fit our calendar, you may still help by donating home-baked cookies for the lunch bags or make a monetary contribution to help cover expenses to provide the meal. To make a contribution, please contact Bob Witmyer (840-8871). Your help is needed to make this service project a reality for our community.

Hope to see you here on April 5th. If this date is not good for you, two additional opportunities for feeding the homeless are scheduled for July.
19 and October 11.

Preschool News

When I think of March I think "green." Of course St. Patrick's Day and the
little leprechauns give us a "Green Day," but also the greenness of budding trees and sprouting grass. There is a feeling of renewal, an appreciation of being alive and enjoying God's gifts.

During March our children learn about the solar system--how the planets, the sun and the stars play a part in our daily lives. Jerri Jones from the York County Recreation Department will visit and show our preschoolers an easy way to remember the planets. The segment concludes with a field trip to the planetarium at the North Museum.

This year we are very fortunate to have some Aldersgate high school students visit our preschool and share their musical talents with us. What a treat for our ears that day will be! Join us on March 13 and bring your instruments.

"When you wish upon a star...makes no difference where you are..."

Our preschool wish list: orange juice cans, large oatmeal containers and
prayers.

Happy Spring

Suggested donations to The WELL for the month of February are Personal
Care Items, Toothpaste, Shampoo, Soap, etc. As always, these are only
suggestions and other items to stock the shelves are always welcome. The
WELL also has a Bed and Bath warehouse, and can use donations of good,
used, serviceable household items such as dishes, cookware, cooking
utensils, curtains, silverware and similar items.

The WELL prepared and distributed 63 Christmas Baskets, which included
a turkey and all the trimmings. In addition, The WELL provided food or
services to 524 persons during Christmas week.

During the month of December, Aldersgate donated 134 pounds of food and
other items.

The WELL continues to have a need for a volunteer (or volunteers) with a
covered pickup truck, SUV or a van to handle pick up and delivery of
various items, either on a regular basis or on call. If you can help,
please call Marge, Director of The WELL, at 852-7345.

Helping Hands Opportunities

In December many of you were involved with our project of feeding the
homeless and needy in downtown York. It was a worthwhile experience for
all of us involved. Many of you have asked to be involved if we do this
again - here is your opportunity! I have committed to do this three
times in 2003: April 5, July 19 and October 11 (all Saturdays). I will
be asking for help in planning the meals, shopping and food preparation.
We will need another team to serve at three downtown locations. I will
post a list of food items needed once menus are planned. Monetary
donations will be appreciated as well. In December we had over 100
people involved in one way or another. Please mark one of these dates on
your calendar and watch for specific details. Call Bonnie Young
(741-6780) with any questions or to volunteer.

CONGRATULATIONS ALDERSGATE! You have filled an ark with many animals
for Heifer Project International. Heifer provides animals as well as
instruction in their care to people in more than 125 countries who need
a helping hand. A gift of livestock helps many families become
self-sufficient as the livestock multiplies and even allows those
families to help others in need when they themselves share some of the
offspring!

February will be the month for attending "The 4 Laws of Effective
Outreach" in Harrisburg. A re-cap class of this awesome seminar will be
coming soon. The class will include Creating an identify for Outreach,
Attracting Visitors by Communicating our Identity, Connecting Attenders
to Our Church and Equipping Members to be Inviters. If this sounds
interesting to you, please contact Linda Gilgore at 755-6069 or
ling873@earthlink.net.

Meals Ministry --

Our Meals Ministry is still in need of volunteers. If you would like to
help or have questions, please call Barb Myers at 246-9923.

The purpose of the Meals Ministry is to deliver one or two prepared
meals to the home of someone with a new baby, someone who has an
illness/hospitalization, or someone who recently lost a family member.
You would only need to make a casserole and deliver it to the home. In
some cases, if you can prepare a meal, but cannot deliver it, someone
else may be able to take care of delivery. Our goal is to deliver two
meals for each family in need and have enough volunteers on the list
that each volunteer would only need to work every 2 - 3 months.

If you know of a family that has recently welcomed a new baby, had an
illness or hospitalization, or experiences the death of a loved one,
please call Barb Myers or give the name and address to Sherry in the
church office. Thank you and God Bless!

WANTED: All United Methodist Men

All United Methodist men are wanted for a time of fellowship and good food!

On the second Thursday evening of each month, the men of Aldersgate gather in the church library for an informal dinner and for a time of fellowship where they explore ways they can contribute their talents to the mission of Aldersgate Church.
Did you know that in 2002, our UMM group raised over $30,000 and lead the way with many of their fellow Aldersgate family members to renovate a Habitat home on York? They are developing plans for other projects for 2003. Some activities on the schedule for this year are a Lenten breakfast, a Mother-Daughter banquet, chicken barbecue, informative speakers at the monthly meetings and many other varied events.

Myth: There is an age requirement to be part of the UMM group.
Fact: UMM welcomes men of all ages to share with them.

So with that all cleared up, mark you calendar for the next meeting Thursday February 13, 2002 at 5:45 PM in the Church library. Sign up on the UMM bulletin board located on the wall a few feet from the office or call Brian Sterner at 792-2422. See you on February 13th!

Posted on behalf of Bill and Terry Rost...

Our nine-year-old son Robby has an autistic spectrum disorder. On
January 27, 1997, when he was almost 4 years old, Robby, who rarely
spoke at that time, spoke to his mother in what had to have been a
moment of unimaginable despair, sobbing out "I wanna talk." Over the
next four year in the public school system, Robby had four different
teachers, in classrooms located in four different school districts. In
February of 2992, halfway through his fourth year in the public school
system, the staff from his classrooms told us that, for weeks after he
had started class, they were not sure whether Robby had any speech at
all. It is very difficult for the public schools to focus on the
specific needs of autistic children. At the start of the 2001 school
year, there were no schools for autistic children in central
Pennsylvania. But there are hundreds of children, like Robby, in need of
just such a school.
You might remember seeing the movie "The Miracle Worker", the version
with Patty Duke as Helen Keller, the deaf and blind girl, and Anne
Bancroft an Annie Sullivan, the teacher. We remember being struck by the
difficulty of the situations portrayed in that movie. And we have
thought of our own son in many similar situations. In fact, many people
now refer to autism as a condition of "mind blindness." We have talked
at length about the similarities of the requirements for learning to
take place in such difficult situations. Helen Keller needed intensive
1-on-1 instruction, so do autistic children. Helen Keller needed a
teacher or school that could stick with her, she had Annie Sullivan.
Absent Annie Sullivan, these children need a school that can give them
the same kind of consistent dedication. That kind of school would give
them a chance to learn; even more a chance for a life where "I wanna
talk" has a chance to become "I can talk."
This school year has been great for Robby because he is attending the
Vista School, a small school whose only focus is autistic children. Mike
Jarman, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, and Donna Lefevre, the
School Director, have done a phenomenal job of creating the Vista
School. We are convinced that Vista not only fills the void of schools
for autistic children in this area, but that it is a great school in the
making. Robby has a great teacher and staff working with him in a
setting that is more consistent, more intensive, and better tailored
towards teaching autistic children than any he has had before. In Vista,
Robby finally has a school; and, for the first time in years, there is a
reason to be optimistic about Robby's future.
Within the past month, the Vista School has embarked on a fundraising
appeal, which, if successful, should go a long way towards establishing
the school. Hopefully, this Community Appeal will have the support of
many people. Please consider making a donation yourself. Brochures are
available in either vestibule, in the church office, or by calling us at
845-1319. Robby is the boy looking right at you near the center of the
cover.

Military Outreach

Thank you to everyone who wrote a Christmas card for our military
personnel serving our country this holiday season. I know many of you
wrote or made cards and encouraged your family, friends and even schools
to join in the project. The collection box at Aldersgate gathered well
over 3,000 cards that were mailed to various locations and ships. I do
not yet have a final count as to how many cards SOAR collected and sent
out, but as of this writing, it is about 60,000. I thank all of you who
contributed toward making this a season where America's soldiers and
sailors know they have the support and prayers of those of us back home.
You have made the holidays brighter for thousands of young men and women.

As the New Year approaches, please continue praying for Aldersgate
family and friends who serve in the military all over the world. If you
have someone on Aldersgate's military prayer list, please keep me
informed of current addresses. There are folks from church who would
like to stay in touch from time to time and it is very helpful for me to
have current information. Just drop a note in the mailbox at church.
Thank you again and Happy New Year to all of you!

Chris Hubbard

Usher & Greeter Training

Because we believe that the Visitor is the most important person in our
building on Sunday morning, our Greeters and Ushers are a high priority
ministry at Aldersgate. Our ushers and greeters provide the very
important “first impression” to our visitors.

For this reason, Pastor Dale will be leading the training for our
current Ushers and Greeters and extends an invitation to anyone who may
be interested in joining one of the future teams of ushers and greeters.

There are just two sessions:
January 12th and January 19th at 9:30 am in the Nelda Jackson Room.

News from The WELL

Suggested donations to The WELL for the month of January are Laundry Supplies and Cleaning Products. As always, these are only suggestions and other items to stock the shelves are always welcome. The WELL also has a Bed and Bath warehouse, and can use donations of good, used, serviceable household items such as dishes, cookware, cooking utensils, curtains, silverware and similar items.
From the beginning of January through the end of November, 2002, The WELL served 1,751 families or a total of 5,757 persons. For Thanksgiving, The WELL prepared and distributed 41 Thanksgiving Baskets, which included a turkey and all the trimmings.
The WELL continues to be in need of someone to help with pick-up of food items. It would be preferable if the person(s) had an SUV or vehicle capable to carrying large loads. If you can assist in this area, please call Marge Ruppert at the WELL - #852-7345.

From the Hospitality Committee...

The Books and Beans Bistro is now officially open in the church library.
We are pleased with the reception it has received. Our goal is for it to
provide a place for you to have the opportunity to fellowship with other
churchgoers. It will be open each Sunday morning from 8:00 am until
12:00 noon. Please monitor young children around the coffee machine. We
also have juice and bottled water in the refrigerator for children or
adults. If you would like to be part of this new venture, each week we
will need snacks and two people per shift (7:30 to 10:00 and 10:00 to
12:30). It's a fun way to be of service and to have the chance to
interact with other churchgoers. If you can help, give Bonnie and Roger
Young a call at 741-6780.

COOKIES TO CAMPUS
As part of the Outreach Ministry at Aldersgate, we are sending care packages to our college students throughout the school year. We recently sent 19 students home-baked chocolate chip cookies made by women from the Providers Class. (Thank you!)

If you know of a college student who did not receive cookies, please contact Wendy Clough @ 741-2317 so they can be included on our mailing list.

If you would like to help with this ministry, please feel free to call Wendy.

If you missed the Ministries Fair and are interested in outreach
opportunities available in our community, please call Linda Gilgore at
755-6069 or e-mail at ling873@earthlink.net. Specifically, York Rescue
mission can use groups of people to work on their Thanksgiving meals
where they collect, assemble and deliver 1600-1800 meals for
Thanksgiving. Feeling thankful for all you have, perhaps helping in
this project is one way to express it. Call with any questions.

In December, in the narthex, be sure to look for the tree laden with
Bells inscribed with gift ideas (both children and adult) for Bell
Shelter families. Also look for the tan envelopes marked "A HELPING
CHRISTMAS" in the sanctuary pew racks for your monetary contributions.

This year we hope to again provide the families of Bell Shelter with
approximately 200 gifts, and with the monetary donations, purchase full
holiday dinners and as well as staples to help ten families through much
of January! Money is also needed to purchase any gifts that have not
been selected from the Bell Tree. Donations of extra frozen turkeys
and paper products are also welcomed.

It is our hope that, with your generous help, every child and adult at
Bell Shelter will have a wonderful Christmas. The shelter staff has
always been most appreciative of how members of Aldersgate open their
hearts to the Shelter families and come through with tremendous support
each year.

If you have any questions about "A Helping Christmas" for Bell Shelter,
please call Judy Dietz at 428-1440. Thank you!

THE WELL

The WELL is most appreciative of the donations received in honor of Mrs.
Helen Wheat's 100th birthday celebration, held September 16, 2002. Dick
and Audrey Naylor, who planned the celebration, suggested donations to
The WELL in lieu of birthday gifts. Donors contributed $240 in cash and
88 pounds of food in Helen's honor. Included in that was a single,
nicely wrapped birthday gift of 24 cans of food from Annabelle.

November suggestions are:
Spaghetti, Spaghetti Sauce, Macaroni & Cheese, Rice, etc.

As always, please do not let these suggestions limit your giving. Other
items to stock the shelves as well as monetary donations are always most
welcome.

The WELL also has a Bed and Bath warehouse and can use donations of
good, used, serviceable household items such as dishes, cookware,
cooking utensils, curtains, silverware and similar items. These are made
available to families who have lost possessions due to unfortunate
circumstances.

BLOOD DONOR UPDATE

The last Blood donation day for this year, 2002, will be Monday,
December 2nd. Aldersgate still needs 44 additional units from donors to
meet the 2002 Hospital quota of 130 units. Meeting this quota ensures
that every Aldersgate member, can received blood in their time of need
during the coming year without replacement or charge.

New and additional donors are needed to support the faithful persons who
are giving blood as often as every eight weeks. More persons from the
Aldersgate Family can provide the Gift of Life to others and support
our Church family. Please consider your gift of a Blood donation. For
reservation call Ruth Minnich, 757-0091, or you can walk in to the Apple
Hill Donor Center. Thank you!

Youth Fellowship

The Junior High Fellowship meets every Sunday:

* Oct. 20th is the Corn Maize.
* Oct. 27th is Game and Pizza Feast at Pizza Zone and the last day to have
$$ in for the fall retreat.

The Senior High Fellowship will be meeting every other Sunday. We do not have
our plan of action yet, but will get it to you soon!

October is Pastor Appreciation Month!

Please remember your Pastors * both Kris-Ann and Dale * in your prayers. Nurture and support are often needed and much appreciated by those who nurture and support church families. Take some time to lift your pastors in prayer and find ways that you can support and encourage them in the work that they do each day because of their love for the Lord.

Attention all military veterans!

If you did not get a chance to sign our veterans lists in either the East or West entrances, you still have time to do so. These will be coming down in October but not before the 15th. Now for the good part, as all of our congregation knows, November 11th is Veterans Day, and Sunday, November 16th will be a Sunday to honor our vets. Also the November Good Tidings will contain a list of the men and women who have signed those lists at church. We want our congregation to know: who was a ships surgeon; who served in the Air Force with their wife; who was in the famous Merrill's Marauders; who rescued pilots; an army office and nurse; and one from our choir who served in Nam. Interesting isn't it??

We would like more, so sign up NOW! (that's an order!) Questions? Call General Nuisance T. Gibbs at 792-2097.

ALDERSGATE UNITED METHODIST GEARS UP
FOR A REHABILITATION CHALLENGE

By Brian Sterner, Building on Faith 2002 Project Coordinator
(Excerpted from the Habitat for Humanity Newsletter)

In 2001 the United Methodist Men's group of Aldersgate Church on Tyler Run Road invited York County Habitat for Humanity to come and speak at their monthly meeting. After an informative presentation of Habitat's involvement in York County and their current projects, the group went from possibly helping on a current project go grasping the possibility of not only funding, but the hand-on completion of a new build project. Habitat representatives came back and explained everything that needed to happen and the wheels started turning. Our project was to be part of a new build project on Broad St.

Not only was the UMM group excited about this project but as the word spread throughout the church everyone wanted to know how they could get involved. We presented the whole project to the church as part of our Ministries Fair and became amazed at the number of people that wanted to be a part of the hand-on building during Building on Faith Week 2002. As our committees continued to work hard on all aspects of the project, we could tell that God was walking with us on this journey, things just seemed to fall into place as the UMM group and the church came together to accomplish this project.

During this preparation time, we lost a key player in Hank Hoffman, as God called him to service in his heavenly kingdom. God helped us through the loss of a dear friend and helped us to become even stronger in our journey of faith.

Then came Habitat's request to change the project from a new-build on Broad St. to a rehab on College Ave. We were not in the least bit discouraged, after all, we knew the point of the project was to provide a home for a deserving and qualified family (Keith & Libby Shaub) and that was still going to happen. Keith and Libby have visited with us during a worship service and it has been an enjoyable experience getting to know them.

We are know looking forward to the week of September 9th to kick off the Building on Faith 2002 project where we will continue and complete the rehabilitation project on West College Avenue. I'm sure this will be a moving experience for our UM M group and the entire Aldersgate family. We are sure to experience much joy as the house is completed and the Shaubs can move in. Our goal is to have them celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday in the comfort of their newly rehabilitated home at 519 West College Avenue.
If you are looking for a Faith challenge that can bring your group and or church together as a family, I highly recommend becoming involved with Habitat for Humanity. This has been a rewarding experience for everyone involved at Aldersgate Church and I truly believe has brought us closer to God as a congregation.

Just Imagine...

Imagine attending a church where no one greets you or gives you a bulletin. Imagine sitting next to someone who won’t acknowledge your presence or shake your hand. The failure of some congregations to greet visitors warmly and invite them back is one of the greatest tragedies of church today.

The church is an extended family, and every Sunday should be a family reunion. The church is a place where all are welcome. By the time they leave, visitors and members should have received at least five smiles and five handshakes, and should have been called by name at least once.

Consider these suggestions:

* If you arrive early, greet people around you.
* As you enter, glance around you and make it a point to welcome newcomers during “The Peace” or after the service.
* Sit in a different pew than usual so you can get to know other people.
* Look around and find one person each week whose name you don’t know. Introduce yourself.
* Make it a point to welcome visitors and invite them back.
* Smile!
* Compliment of thank someone each Sunday.
* Invite someone to lunch after the service.

Remember, friendliness is contagious! Our attitudes and actions make a difference.

The Hospitality Ministry

We have many ways of getting to know Jesus, and learning that

Jesus is the Way

Come join us.

Discipleship

Are you looking for a way to make a dream come true for God? Has he put something on your heart that you feel should be done? I believe God gives visions to His people. That is how new ministries begin. We are looking for people who are open to the Holy Spirit and have a heart to spread the Word of God. Whether in the Body of Christ or the world, we know God has given us a job and it is time to do it. So, if you are looking for a place that can help with your passions for growing the Body of Christ, please contact us either by putting a note in Pat Bollinger's mailbox or calling at 410-452-0931.

We are currently working on some short-term ministries to begin in 2003. We want not only ideas from the congregation, but from your friends and neighbors as well. Watch for our campaign and please participate.

There are many exciting programs and events coming from our team programs. We encourage all in the Body to become team members and work for God using the gift(s) He has given you. We look forward to an exciting year spreading God's Word in many directions.

Back to School Collection - Thank you!

The Outreach Ministries has completed the Back to School collection to benefit local charities and we were thrilled with the amount of participation we got. We collected: 1 paint vest, 38 packs of crayons, 30 glue sticks, 11 glue bottles, 4 scissors, 6 rolls of scotch tape, 2 packs of post-it notes, 7 pencil boxes, 5 binders, 5 folders, 17 backpacks, 49 notebooks 67 packs of pencils and 15 packs of markers! Thank you SOOOO much! Thanks to Sally Snyder to who coordinated the collection and delivered the goodies to the Salvation Army, Access York, and the Lehman Center. In addition to the supplies, $125 was given to the Salvation Army for shoes on behalf of our congregation. Bell Shelter received enough clothing for each of the children at the shelter to receive a new school uniform, including shirt, pants/skirt and shoes. Shanika Stephens will be receiving her surprise items for her dorm room at Lincoln University in Philadelphia for her first year there, as a project through Crispus Attucks. Thanks again to everyone who made this such a rewarding project. It's always a good feeling to lend a hand!

The Well

Suggested donations to The WELL for the month of October are:

LAUNDRY SUPPLIES AND CLEANING PRODUCTS

These are merely suggestions and other items to stock the shelves are always most welcome. Monetary contributions are especially welcome to help defray administrative expenses!
